Tasks:

1. Examine how the United States spread westward during the 1800s, and the compromises designed to deal with expansion and slavery
2. Discuss the causes and effects of urbanization in the United States, and the development of suburbs and sprawl.
3. Discuss the sociological theories of the melting pot and the salad bowl, as well as assimilation into a larger society.
4. Account for the earliest immigrants to America including those seeking religious freedom, land and those brought forcibly enslaved.
5. Account for the great wave of immigration that came with the industrialization of America during the Gilded Age and into the early 20th century. Also account for/discuss the backlashes against the increased immigration that resulted in restrictions and quotas in the 1920s.
6. Account for and state your opinion as to the issue of immigration as it faces contemporary America, including the issues of illegal immigration, the desire for skilled immigrants, and US efforts to adjust to a changing population.
7. Account for the political system in the United States of America, and explain the functions carried out by the two chambers.
8. Account for the major political parties in the US.
9. Identify minority groups in the US and consider their possible links with politics.
10. Account for lobbyism in America and state pros and cons.
